The Great British-American Pub Quiz 2018, Hosted by the BABC Young Professionals (#BABCPubQuiz18)

On the night of Monday June 25th, the BABC Young Professionals hosted the 5th annual Great British American Pub Quiz at our favourite pub,
Harrington’s Bar and Grill. This year the coveted trophy was hotly contested by 17 teams of intrepid quizzers, some veterans of the game, and some fresh faced rookies.

The quiz, hosted by sage (quiz)masters of their craft, James Wallace, Lyall Brown and William Goff, consisted of 7 rounds of questions designed to test both British and American knowledge.

The categories were:

  • Trivia
  • Sport
  • Business
  • Film
  • Music
  • Famous Quotes
  • Celebrity Faces

With a lively crowd on good form, the Quiz Masters, ably assisted by BABC Executive Director Jo Healey and Andy McCloskey and Corey Hastings, ran a smooth operation, keeping the rowdy but good natured bunch in check, and fielding questions and heckles with style and grace.

The quiz was once again a close affair, with numerous former champions chomping at the bit to reclaim their prize and return to their former glory.

With all the talent in the crowd, it is to their credit that, for the second time in 3 years, the winning team was ‘When Seagulls Follow the Trawler’ from
NCCGroup. They were the proud winners of 4 tickets to a San Francisco Giants game, along with baseball caps, kindly donated by Giants Enterprises, 4 bottles of bubbly, and 4 mini Rugby World Cup Sevens 2018 balls. Their teams name will once again be immortalised on the base of the BABC Pub Trophy.

In second place, winning the prize of 4 $50 vouchers for
Credo Restaurant, and 4 HSBC backpacks was Hardly Smart Brilliant Club, from…ironically…HSBC.

In third place winning 4 water bottles kindly donated by
RGP, and 4 camera privacy covers kindly donated by NCC Group.

There were also prizes for last place, and best team name. Last place prize was decks of cards and notebooks, which went to the British Braniac Society, and the best team name prize of 4 bottle of red wine from the BABC cellars went to ‘Brexit at Tiffany’s’.

Our sincere thanks go out to all who attended, and of course the incredibly kind sponsors of the evening:
NCCGroup for their generous contribution to the bar tab Giants Enterprises and Rugby World Cup Sevens 2018 for their 1st place prize donation, Credo and HSBC for their second place prize donation, RGP for their 3rd place prize donations, and 2020 Productions who assisted with the audio set up for the quiz – We greatly appreciate you generosity and support, without which the event couldn’t have gone ahead.

Commiserations go to the losing teams, we know many of you will be back next year to try again to reach the top of the food chain– We are already looking forward to it!
