HSBC was born from one simple idea – a local bank serving international needs.
The experiences of the past 150 years have formed the character of HSBC. A glance at our history explains why we believe in capital strength, in strict cost control and in building long-term relationships with customers.
HSBC has weathered change in all forms – revolutions, economic crises, new technologies – and adapted to survive. The resulting corporate character enables HSBC to meet the challenges of the 21st century.
The success of Penfolds has been driven by the generations of visionaries and innovators. From the beginning in 1844 to today, the merging of science, art and innovation has driven Penfolds to become one of Australia’s most famed and respected winemakers.
It’s easy to look to things like innovative products and services, glamorous destinations and charismatic crew in bright red uniforms as the reasons for our success. But these are just part of our story. The personality and language of our brand plays a major role too, and to get a grasp on why, it’s useful to look at our past.
When we first started flying in 1984, the world was changing rapidly. In the UK, boom time had arrived, and a lot of people had more money to spend, with a greater desire to explore the world. The airline world hadn’t changed much at all and there wasn’t much choice, each country only had its state owned legacy airline. Expensive, with little emphasis on the customers’ needs, if you needed to get somewhere, you only had one airline to choose from. And what a dull, grey experience that was.
The time was right for someone to come in and shake things up. And did we ever.

The series begins with A Vintage Year for Insider Trading described by author Stephen M. Murphy as “an enjoyable romp through wine country with high-powered lawyers, rich techies, and a talking sheepdog.”
The next novel A Vintage Year for Libel and Slander features the same sheepdog, Sidney, who decides to take matters into his own paws after a $50 million diamond engagement ring mysteriously disappears during a wine country event.
Sidney has also started a unique blog called Sheepdog Sidney’s Blog. Many blogs give advice to humans about how to manage their difficult pets. Sheepdog Sidney’s blog is unique because Sidney gives advice to pets on how to manage their difficult humans.

We are the world’s largest startup community.
Startup Grind was founded in 2010 when our founder, Derek Andersen got some friends and fellow entrepreneurs together to crack the same problem they were all facing: the growing challenges of launching a company. What became clear was these obstacles were extensive and stretched far beyond their group. Their gatherings soon spurred a local startup movement that attracted founders and experts from every industry, all coming together to share their advice and inspirations for early entrepreneurs. Eventually, vibrant Startup Grind communities (“chapters”) began developing in Los Angeles, Tel Aviv, London, New York, Beijing, and many more.
Our community proves that entrepreneurs are in fact, stronger together. We aim to give startups everywhere the education and opportunities they need to build, grow, and scale their companies.
