BABC Members:
In the colorful early days of California’s Gold Rush, a group of Scots gathered in San Francisco to form a society designed to preserve and further Scottish traditions and culture, as well as to aid Scots in distress. From this initial gathering, The Saint Andrew’s Society of San Francisco was formally organized in 1863 and incorporated under the laws of California in August of 1865.
Our Society joins persons of Scottish birth and heritage in a bond of cultural and benevolent purpose, the latter best expressed in our motto:
“Our Ain llls Aye Hae Strength to Bear Anither’s Aye Hae Heart to Feel.”
Today, aid to people of Scottish origin or descent in distress remains an important function for us. We cooperate frequently with the British Benevolent Society of San Francisco and join with organizations such as the Daughters of Scotia and the Daughters of the British Empire in special projects. Our aid ranges from individual assistance to large-scale contributions, such as to victims of the recent fires in Northern California.
Our Board of Student Assistance helps students of Scottish heritage who are from Northern California or Scotland that study in a Scottish or Bay Area university. We have formal relations with many institutions, including the University of Edinburgh as part of our Capital City Scholarship Program as well as UC Berkley.
Our cultural promotions provide encouragement and funding to bagpipe bands, Highland dance groups, and Celtic music study. Our “Hospitality Tent” is a key feature of the Highland Gathering & Games of the Clans held at Pleasanton over the Labor Day weekend. We host the best Burns Supper in the Bay Area in January and an Annual Holiday Banquet & Ball in November, as well as events throughout the year to both celebrate our culture and to raise funds for our philanthropy.
The Society welcomes sponsorship to support our charitable programs and provides organizations with many opportunities to give and receive in partnership with us, including:
