Mounting cuts to federal support for science directly threaten U.S. technology leadership in the world and with that U.S. health, growth, and security. With its many leading universities and scientific institutions California is particularly affected, but this is a national issue affecting scientific research everywhere. The attached column assesses the direction of current policies and their expected impacts and makes the case for why a deeper conversation between government and scientific leaders on technology’s contributions to U.S. leadership is essential.
